Ask Coach Julia: Tempo Runs

When Julia first offered to train me for a 5K, I told her it wasn’t the right time. I didn’t have the right shoes, the right clothes, the right body. Come back in six months. No, make that twelve, I said. Luckily she saw through my nonsense and next thing I was huffing and swearing my way towards 5K.

Zap forward seven years to February 2012 and we’re in Barcelona, dreaming and scheming for Up & Running. We have the idea of making Ask Coach Julia videos to help share the answers to the questions the dear coach lady receives with a wider audience. We have been procrastifaffing (thanks Cels for that indispensable word) ever since.

We need to get a proper video camera.
We don’t have a proper backdrop.
Should we take a course about how to make videos?
And makeup lessons?
We probably need fancy microphones.
And laptops that don’t audibly wheeze when you run two apps at once. 

Then last week it just occurred to me, for the millionth time, that if you waited for the perfect time, place, hairdo, material item… you would never bloody create anything in this life. So we asked our dear Alumni members for questions and we made our video with our shitty laptops (including mine that spontaneously turns the volume up or down!).

The rough edges make us twitch but we know we’ll never get on our way to somewhere awesome until we make a start.

So! This first edition of Ask Coach Julia is all about Tempo Runs.
